"If it comes to the crunch" nghĩa là gì?

"If/when it comes to the crunch (tiếng kêu răng rắc)" = Khi đến lúc phải quyết định, ra tay thực hiện (nước đã tới chân/vào thời khắc quan trọng).

Ví dụ
In the face of rising tensions with the United States and China, sports stadiums might become the same. American companies may ideally wish to keep everybody onside, but if it comes to the crunch they’ll go with their biggest market over their second-biggest.

The BCCI was the first to object to the plan, and BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal said to the Indian Express: “We are seriously going to oppose their (new) governance structure, business model and future tours programme. If it comes to the crunch, then I don’t see the BCCI signing the Members Participation Agreement.”

As the story progresses it becomes difficult to discern just which of the two is the bigger threat to the other. And it’s only in conclusion we realise it is neither. Because John has an epiphany (sự hiển linh, thấu tỏ) about choice he decides to take a different path, but this only comes courtesy of the decision made by Tim himself and so he follows his example. Much as the unfolding drama blurs the line as to which is the more honourable protagonist (vai chính) it also makes it difficult to decide which has made the right choice, if it could even be said that either of them has managed to do so. Only time will tell. But one thing is for sure, if it comes to the crunch it is still up in the air as to who will be the victor in a clash between the two. And I may be mistaken but in saving Tim’s life using the flesh of the Shahmaran…didn’t he also just imbue (thấm đẫm) him with mystical wisdom..? Food for thought (điều phải cân nhắc).
