The “Best Six Months” strategy has become legendary on Wall Street. “Sell in May and go away” means investing in the Dow Jones Industrial Average between Nov. 1 and April 30 and switching into fixed income for the other six months. This has dramatically outperformed owning the Dow Industrials from May 1 to Oct. 31.

One traditional strategy that looked successful for a while was “sell in May and go away,” an idea that involves selling equities (công chính, vốn cổ đông) for the summer months. Rising tensions in the trade war (chiến tranh thương mại) between the United States and China highlighted the month of May, which saw the S&P 500 fall 6.58%.

This time of year, one refrain (kiềm lại) reigns supreme among investors: “Sell in May and go away.” The classic, rhyming investment adage argues you should get out before the “weak” summer months, re-entering in the fall. Many are convinced markets demonstrate seasonal patterns you might be able to game to your advantage. But there is a problem, in our view: The calendar doesn’t drive markets. A look at historical data illustrates how chasing this supposed seasonal tendency has most often been a costly mistake.
