"Cut the cord" = Cắt dây cáp -> Cắt mối quan hệ ràng buộc/ngột ngạt (thường là con cái với cha mẹ); không phụ thuộc vào ai/cái gì nữa và có thể tự lập được.

Ví dụ
I did get to see her a little bit and her dad got to cut the cord. But then they took her straight away. I didn't get to see her for about four hours. She was in an incubator (lồng nuôi trẻ em đẻ non, vườn ươm), with lots of wires monitoring her heart rate and a nasal tube in."

The thing is, my boyfriend is afraid to leave his parents. They pressure him to finish their unfinished projects and take advantage of him. It’s like he’s being punished, and not receiving any support. I can’t stand to visit his family home. How do I get him to understand it’s not his responsibility and that he should not feel guilty for leaving to begin living his own life? He needs to cut the cord!

Thousands of people have taken to Twitter to explain why they stopped supporting the Republican Party using the hashtag #ILeftTheGOP. The topic was among the top trends on Monday morning as users posted their reasons for leaving the party, with many placing the blame on President Donald Trump. The hashtag took off after columnist Cheri Jacobus tweeted that she left the party in 2016 as they nominated Trump and asked others to share when they "cut the cord."
