"Put (one) off the trail" = Đánh lạc hướng của ai -> Đánh lạc hướng điều tra/theo dõi hoặc theo đuổi của ai.

Ví dụ
"I tried to shield her and put her off the trail but she panicked (hoảng sợ) and jumped right back in front of the bike," Hawkins said. "He hit her and just kept going."

"That news almost put me off the trail, but I couldn't accept that this vision had lived in my heart for all those years just so I could learn that it had been turned into kindling by a tornado (bão táp)," she said.

If I were not already a Catholic but were searching for the true religion, this massive disconnect between what the Church says it is and how it has acted in the past half-century might have put me off the trail. I would have reasoned: “Orthodox Jews, Eastern Orthodox Christians, High Church Anglicans, Moslems—all of them have clung faithfully and steadfastly to their age-old traditions, have cultivated them and treasured them, and would never give them up.
