"(Climb) the greasy pole" = leo cột mỡ -> nghĩa là con đường khó khăn/vất vả để được thăng tiến trong sự nghiệp.

Ví dụ
School assembly guests are usually a pretty dry bunch (bầy, lũ): ex-pupils who’ve climbed up the greasy pole of their career, policemen with lectures (bài giảng) about avoiding deep water or men with sweets, vicars (cha sở).

At school, most of us dream of a career that’s not only fulfilling (thỏa mãn) but financially (tài chính) rewarding too. But while a handful (một ít) of lucky souls will climb the greasy pole of success, most of us will be content (hài lòng) with a job that pays the bills while we daydream what might have been if only we’d concentrated (tập trung) a bit more in lessons.

There is a view that the articles politicians (chính trị gia) write when they are far from office (or the prospect (toàn cảnh) of it) are the truest representation (đại diện chân thực nhất) of their core beliefs (niềm tin cốt lõi). Unfettered (được giải phóng) by ambition (tham vọng) to climb the greasy pole, they say whatever they want, whatever springs to mind when the comment desk is badgering (quấy rầy) them to pay at least some minimum regard to deadlines.
