"Goober grabber" nghĩa là người thu hoạch đậu phộng. "Goober" là tên gọi khác của động phộng/lạc (peanut) của người Georgia, từ này còn dùng để phân biệt người Georgia với người vùng khác.

Georgian Confederate soldiers (lính) were often snidely (cạnh khóe) called "goober grabbers." Calling someone a goober today isn't a compliment (lời khen), but there's usually some affection (tác động) involved.

Before the Civil War (Nội Chiến) era Goober-grabber was a common nickname for a backwoods (vùng rừng xa xôi hẻo lánh) Georgian, but it was also applied to Alabamians, and the simple Goober was a nickname for North Carolinians.

The nicknames that do survive (tồn tại) are mostly associated with college sports teams. Television has carried those far and wide. But TV, the most ubiquitous (khắp nơi) venue of popular culture (văn hóa đại chúng) before the internet, has also done much to homogenize (đồng nhất hóa) American English, scrubbing away at accents and regionalisms (từ ngữ địa phương). Prune-pickers (Californians), Boll weevils (Texans), Goober-grabbers (Georgians) and Muskrats (Delawarean) might be ok with that.
