"Hit (one's) straps" = đánh bằng dây da, đánh bằng roi da -> đẩy tốc độ di chuyển nhanh hơn. Nghĩa bóng là cố hết sức để trở nên thành thạo (trong công việc, lĩnh vực cụ thể). "Hit one's stride" cũng có nghĩa tương tự.

Ví dụ
Whatever the process (quá trình) the band really hit their straps when Gary Young joined the band as drummer (tay trống).

The twenty-year-old Sydneysider was a clear-eyed young man from the beach suburb (ngoại ô) of Bondi and only just hitting his straps in combat (trận chiến) with a couple of recent claims to his name.

Can you imagine being allowed forty, fifty or sixty years to hit your straps? They say late bloomers are rare not because talent (tài năng) in older people is rare, but because talents that might develop when we're older often don't get the chance to shine (tỏa sáng).

Not from the conference (hội nghị), which was fantastic (tuyệt vời), and they'd really hit their straps. By then most of the attendees (người tham dự) knew who they were —who Angus was, at any rate—had heard that he'd volunteered (tình nguyện) to help them update their brand (thương hiệu) and someone had researched (nghiên cứu) him enough to know he was doing the same for Remède.
