"Soft pedal (something)" có từ mới "pedal" nghĩa là cái bàn đạp trên chiếc xe đạp hay trong đàn dương cầm, để điều khiển những cử động hoặc âm thanh theo ý mình muốn. Vì thế người Mỹ dùng "soft pedal khi muốn nói là họ làm nhẹ bớt tầm quan trọng của một điều gì.
