"Be neither one thing nor the other" nghĩa là gì?

"Be neither one thing nor the other" = không phải cái này, cũng không phải cái kia -> nghĩa là sự kết hợp (hấp dẫn hoặc kinh khủng) của hai điều khác nhau.

Ví dụ
The fact that they are now declaring (tuyên bố) we’re moving into this second phase, as if it’s some kind of planned event, is really meaningless (vô nghĩa). We need to mobilise (huy động) the whole community response (phản ứng cộng đồng) to this and they are behaving in a top-down way, in a half-hearted (nửa vời) way, so it’s neither one thing nor the other.

Mr Galloway also spoke about the UK's "slow" response (phản ứng chậm) to the COVID-19 outbreak (bùng phát). He said: "It's clear that Boris Johnson's British Government has a policy which is neither fish (cá) nor fowl (gà). "It has a policy (chính sách) which is neither one thing nor the other. In any case, it was way too late. At least 10 days, maybe 14 days too late in being implemented (thực thi)."

There’s another analogy (phép loại suy) that comes to mind. When a caterpillar (sâu bướm) enters its chrysalis (nhộng tằm), it dissolves (hòa tan) itself, quite literally, into liquid. In this state, what was a caterpillar and will be a butterfly is neither one nor the other, it’s a sort of living soup. Within this living soup are the imaginal cells (tế bào ảo) that will catalyse (xúc tác) its transformation (biến đổi) into winged maturity (trưởng thành).
