"Mother Carey is plucking her chickens/goose" = chim hải âu đang nhổ lông. Cụm từ này nói đến hiện tượng tuyết rơi. Từ thời xa xưa, các thủy thủ coi những chú chim hải âu nhỏ (mother carey's chickens) mang đến điềm báo thời tiết xấu.

Ví dụ
Snow snow! Mother Carey's plucking chickens, I suppose.

It had started to snow. The flakes (bông tuyết) were over the windscreen (kính chắn gió) and the wipers (cần gạt) were pushing back so heavily that the car hardly moved. 'Mother Carey is plucking her goose,' said the driver.

This was that a ship off the beach with snow on her riggings foretold (báo trước) a wreck (xác tàu chìm) with loss of life or a war. The Donegal fisherfolk (ngư dân) regarded a marine (trên biển) snowfall as Mother Carey plucking her chickens.

As the hours wore on, Mother Carey plucked her chickens in greater numbers until the town was wrapped (bao phủ) in a thick, flattering blanket which lay on everything from the tower (tòa) of Paul's to the tip of Abraham's beak where he sat, hunched (cúi lưng) and motionless (bất động) above Blackfriars.
