"Neither chick nor child" nghĩa là gì?

"Neither chick nor child" = chẳng gà con cũng chẳng con cái -> nghĩa là sống đơn chiếc lẻ loi, chẳng có con cái ở chung mà cũng chẳng có nuôi con thú kiểng nào.

Ví dụ
As it happens, I've a matter of sixty pounds put away in the savings bank, not a penny of which will ever be the least bit of use to me — having neither chick nor child to leave it to.

The repeated allusion (nói bóng gió) to his having neither chick nor child, although perhaps uttered by the speaker without any particular intention (ý định), did not pass unheeded (không ai để ý) by Quiddy.

I've enough to live on, and have neither chick nor child. Now — I hate trouble, I know nothing about housekeeping (việc nhà) — that was always my poor angel's affair — and don't want the care of it, if I did.

And the scenes just worsen as a woman’s value (giá trị) is placed only on her ability (khả năng) to have children (constant references to how Mary Kate and Seán should have kids and the widow character (nhân vật góa phụ) being referred to as well-respected (kính trọng) even though she “had neither chick nor child”); as female intellect (trí tuệ) is dismissed.
