"Be sent to Coventry" hoặc "send someone to Conventry" nghĩa là tẩy chay, cô lập ai như một hình phạt. Cụm từ được cho là xuất hiện từ thời kỳ Nội chiến ở Anh ("English Civil War", 1642-1651, là một loạt các cuộc chiến giữa Quốc hội và phe Bảo hoàng Anh), các tù nhân thuộc phe Bảo hoàng bị đưa tới nhà tù ở thành phố Coventry, nơi ủng hộ Quốc hội, những tù nhân này tất nhiên đã bị xa lánh tại Coventry.
