"Shotgun shack" có từ shack là cái lều, lán -> cụm từ này nghĩa là ngôi nhà một tầng, trong đó các phòng nằm thẳng hàng với nhau và được kết nối bằng dãy hành lang dài từ đầu đến cuối.
