"In a minor key" = khóa thứ/ âm giai thứ (âm nhạc). Nghĩa khác là gạch chân (understate), ý chỉ các khái niệm trừu tượng hoặc (tâm trạng) buồn/ (quy mô, chất lượng) hạn chế, nhỏ.

Ví dụ
Dance music would become more synthetic (giả tạo) as the years rolled by, but Caribou started the decade by reminding the world that electronic music is written in a minor key for a reason.

“It’s rare to see a minor-key drama that doesn’t overextend (trải rộng) the nature of the material,” says IndieWire, “and rarer still for cinema to dig this deep into the female psyche (tâm lý) without boxing it in.”

Research attests to the appeal of musical wallowing: A 2008 study conducted (thực hiện) in Japan and published (công bố) in Frontiers in Emotion Science found that participants largely preferred songs played in a minor key (and perceived as “sad”) to those played in a major key (khóa trưởng).

The hypnotic (thôi miên), minor-key groove is great enough, but the dancing-with-the-devil lyric is just as good. Texas legend Hubbard is best known for “Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother,” but his songwriting and stage presence (khả năng làm chủ sân khấu) have always been light years better than that timeless gem.
