"Chew the rag" = nhai miếng vải -> nghĩa là bàn tán, trò chuyện, chém gió trong khoảng thời gian dài một cách nhàn rỗi, thân thiện.

Ví dụ
“If you like animation and love The Beatles, come see the show,” he says. “There’s no obligation (luật lệ). It’s free to get in and come chew the rag with me.”

Gomera whistles aren’t signals, like a hill farmer gives to his dog. They are conversations; one can hear it; there is no doubt. Sometimes, one can almost guess at what they’re saying: “Hey, Jose, if you’re going to la villa in the morning, can you fetch (đem về) me two adzes and pick up Conchita’s dress?” So, they make arrangements to do this or that or, sometimes, simply chew the rag.

In the early 1900s, Ben Turner, a fondly remembered local character who was always ready to “chew the rag” with passersby (người qua đường), kept a shoeshine stand under the tree each summer.
