"Hurler on/in the ditch" = vật cản trong mương -> nghĩa là (không làm) nhưng khuyên bảo người đang thực sự xắn tay vào làm và phán xét cách họ làm.

Ví dụ
But Mr Creed said “it’s easy to be a hurler on the ditch and commenting on everyone else’s efforts”. He said that everyone was trying to do their best and it was in every plant’s best interests to ensure the health of their workers.

Minister Creed also bit back at Stanley and said: "Deputy Stanley has categorised all of this as a mess but it is easy to be a hurler on the ditch commenting on everybody else's best endeavours (cố gắng)."

Formulaic (theo công thức có sẵn), however, has a negative (tiêu cực) connotation (ý nghĩa), implying that they are unoriginal. But as McManus rightly points out: what else are they supposed to do? The difference has to come from the creator's ideas, opinions, and personality. Indeed, the rest is just filler. To use an Irish idiom: it's easy to be a "hurler in the ditch" rather than put yourself out there.
