"Pay the piper" = trả tiền cho người thổi sáo -> trả giá cho hành động/ việc làm sai lầm; gánh chịu hậu quả do sai lầm của mình; chịu tổn thất/ tổn phí mọi khoản.

Ví dụ
Authorities say a pill-pushing (khoa nội) doctor who is criminally charged (buộc tội) for teaming with (hợp sức) an ex-Brooklyn Assemblyman to peddle (bán rong) millions of Oxycodone tablets (viên thuốc) to addicted patients should be forced to pay the piper.

Earlier this month, BP shocked the market when it announced it was slashing (cắt giảm) 10,000 jobs--or 15% of its total workforce--thanks to the current climate. While some other smaller oil companies had announced multiple job cuts spread across multiple tranches (đợt) over the last couple of months, BP held off during the height of the pandemic--but even BP had to pay the piper eventually.

Before going further, who is to check and audit (kiểm toán) the accounts of the schools to determine their ability to pay the salaries of teachers? Also, how and who will identify and certify (cấp bằng) ‘well-to-do (giàu có) parents’? If one wants particular music, one has to pay the piper what he wants and when he wants. Corporate-style schools and individual fancies seem to go ill-together.
