"Put (one's) life on the line" có on the line là mập mờ ở giữa, gặp rủi ro nghiêm trọng, có nguy cơ thất bại -> cụm từ này có nghĩa là đặt tính mạng/liều mạng sống hoặc đặt bản thân vào tình thế nguy hiểm để đạt điều gì.

Ví dụ
“What universe are we living in? You go, put your life on the line, you could quite possibly die,” said Jay Jordan, the executive director of Californians for Safety and Justice and an advocate who has served time in prison. “If we’re sending them to fire camps and we’re saying that they’re good people, why are they still in prison?”

Nick Cannon is "ready to put his life on the line" to fight the Black Lives Matter cause amidst the coronavirus pandemic. The television presenter admits he struggles with his immune system (hệ thống miễn dịch) and so should really be shielding during the current health crisis, but he wants to go out and support the protests (sự phản đối, biểu tình) after George Floyd, an unarmed black man, was murdered by a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, in Minneapolis.

"We took a knee at the front line and the police threw tear gas - that was their response," said a young man who was taunting (mắng nhiếc, chửi bới) police and gave his name only as "X" - clad in black and wearing a military-style ammunition belt (đai chứa đạn dược phong cách quân đội) with a tattered piece of an American flag attached. "I did five years in the military (quân đội), put my life on the line in Iraq, put my life on the line in Djibouti, just to come back home and get treated like shit," the man added.
