"Cherchez la femme" trong tiếng Pháp dịch ra tiếng Anh là “look for a woman" (đuổi theo đàn bà), nghĩa là chỉ hành động kỳ lạ của đàn ông không giống thường ngày (ăn vận đẹp đẽ...) như để thu hút đàn bà.

Ví dụ
If I were the police, I'd cherchez la femme, but la other femme. I'd cherchez la iron maiden. A very angry, insulted (lăng mạ) iron maiden with a bad, bad temper and enormous, deluded ambitions (tham vọng xấu), la femme whose husband flagrantly (trắng trợn) cheats and—to add insult to injury—commits the real sin, which is to lose their money.

For early modern Portugal, it would be more accurate to say: cherchez la femme avec la terre. It was women's ability to inherit (kế thừa), own, buy, sell, or bequeath (truyền lại) property that gave them a voice in the negotiations to settle a dispute, in the ability to grant a pardon, and ostensibly forgo (từ bỏ) that to which they were entitled.

But then he said in this seriously miserable voice, “Cherchez la femme.”
“Cherchez la what?”
“It's just this French saying. If a guy's behaving weirdly, look for the woman.” His face was whiter than usual, and sadder.
“Are you hiding a le woman somewhere?"
"No," he said. "It's my le dad. He has a le femme."
