"Not have a penny/cent to (one's) name" hoặc "without a penny to one's name" nghĩa là nghèo rớt mồng tơi, không có lấy một đồng.

Ví dụ
Have you ever had nothing, owned nothing, not so much as a penny to your name?

She decided that junior would have to give her five pounds for him not to be locked up. Five pounds in those days was a lot of money. He did not have a penny to his name and he knew without a doubt that he would go to prison.

These are selfless (vị tha) prayers of the selfless person; those that have freely given-up the treasures of this life for those stored in Heaven. Fr. Jacob does not have a penny to his name, nor would he accept one if it were to be used for personal gain.

Thanks to Bessie Mae Brown's southern cooking, I'd developed, around my middle, a little cushion of fat, my 'insurance packet', as I thought of it. You might not have a penny to your name, but as long as you have that little cushion of fat, you're ready to rub elbows (giao tiếp), a civilized man!
