"Thick as two planks" có từ thick (nghĩa cổ) là dốt, thick là dày, tức là ngắn hơn chiều dài, ngắn cũng hàm ý là dốt, "đầu ngắn", hai khúc gỗ thì càng thick, càng ngắn -> cụm từ này nghĩa là rất ngu ngốc, đần độn; đầu đất.
