"Van Gogh’s ear for music" = đôi tai nghe nhạc của Van Gogh -> cụm từ này nghĩa là không có khả năng thẩm âm (Van Gogh là họa sĩ nổi tiếng người Hà Lan tự cắt tai trái của mình); hát lệch tông.

We have often been accused of possessing Van Gogh's ear for music, but do we have his eye for painting? We have never found out. With more time at home, maybe now is the chance to don a jaunty smock, wax up the moustache and become an artiste.

Recently at a church service the CEO and I attended, the chancel choir had sung at the earlier service — we typically attend what might be termed the “lazybones service.” The anthem at ours was a lovely trumpet solo. The name was “Il Silenzio.” The CEO says I have Van Gogh’s ear for music (the missing one), but I thought I still detected some notes from the military “Taps.”

There is a standard joke that the musically illiterate (người không có kiến thức về âm nhạc) have “Vincent van Gogh’s ear for music,” but van Gogh himself actually studied the piano briefly and took music very seriously. Van Gogh’s Ear is structured around a selection of the artist’s letters to his brother Theo and arranged with musical counterpoint by Eve Wolf, whose company, Ensemble for the Romantic Century, specializes in pairing primary historical sources with chamber music.
