"Ours not to reason why" nghĩa là gì?

It really shows how quickly fortunes (vận may) can change. There we were, the model kid in class that was doing so well at the start and then, kapow – we are at the back of the class, and wondering how we got there. But ours not to reason why, ours but to do and obey (tuân theo) because it’s the right thing to do for the greater good. The sooner we can knock this thing on its head, the better for everyone.

Then, as now, it is equally the fault of the political pundits (học giả) in Westminster and the craven civil service in Whitehall, as much as that of the Lords Raglan and Cardigan, that people are exposed to death when cannons and coronavirus ‘volley and thunder’. Also, now as then, there is no excuse except the grace and saving-face (giữ thể diện) of death or dismissal for those who blindly follow orders under the imprimatur (phê chuẩn, cho phép) ‘ours not to reason why; ours but to do or die’.

I did not understand these trend (trào lưu) pieces until I read a Keith Gessen short story. Ours not to reason why, ours but to do or die — and to that end I would like to be thrown off Masada by Keith Gessen, as the audiobook of his novel “A Terrible Country” plays.

If questions are not asked, there’s every chance someone blunders (sai lầm). There’s every chance blunders are happening right now. If it’s ours not to make reply, ours not to reason why, then ours but to do and die.
