“Blow up in (one's) face” = tan (thành mây khói) ngay trước mắt -> nghĩa là kế hoạch thất bại, hỏng kế hoạch.

Ví dụ
Granted, while I have loved, lost and had things blow up in my face, I don’t know what it is like to lose a presidential election; yet somehow, if I lost that election knowing more than 70 million people voted for me, it would not be humiliating (nhục nhã).

"It blew up in my face and I had to address it. I was like 'what am I doing here? I'm not living a life that I want' and that's why I had to get so pissed (say), to live in it." So one day on her lunch break, Green - 24 at the time - bought a ticket to India and quit her job.

When it happened, I didn't really want to tell anyone. And when I did tell a school counselor (cố vấn), it was her duty, of course, to report it to the school and it ended up blowing up in my face. It was a lot. I had to go through the court system, whether or not I wanted to press charges, and it was hard for me because as a kid — you're 10 years old, you know, you don't want to see anyone get into trouble.
