"More kicks than halfpence" có từ "kick" là đá, "halfpence" là nửa xu -> nghĩa là bị chửi nhiều được khen (dù) ít, bực mình khó chịu nhiều hơn là thích thú.

Ví dụ
Didn't these unions know that corruption (tham nhũng) would result in cutting jobs? It is a case of diminishing wealth where you get no dividends (cổ phần) but more kicks than a halfpence.

I get more kicks than halfpence for looking after my sister's dog when she is away on holiday. She always complains that I spoil (làm hư) the dog and give it too much to it.

At the same time I believe the most ancient (cổ xưa) Colony of Great Britain is also the most loyal one, and I do not think we should be willing to leave the Empire under almost any conceivable (có thể hiểu được) circumstances. We may get more kicks than halfpence, but we prefer your kicks to the halfpence of other people.

“You know,” I said to myself, “that like all the rest of your grumbling (càu nhàu) race, you deserve more kicks than halfpence, and yet you have received more halfpence than kicks; be thankful that you have been spared so long, strive that the residue (phần còn lại) of your years may be more useful than the past, and remember "the baren fig (cây sung) tree!"
