"Épater les bourgeois" -> nghĩa là khiến những người có tư tưởng, quan điểm cổ hủ hoặc tự mãn phải tức giận, khó chịu.

I don’t want to shortchange (lừa bịp) his thoughtful elaboration (tỉ mỉ) on the subject, but it does seem to boil down for him to youths, some blue-collared, many with useless baccalaureates (kỳ thi tú tài), sublimating (chế ngự) anomie (thiếu đạo đức) into smashed car windows and the odd bit of arson. “It appeals to the adolescent appetite for transgression, the épater les bourgeois ethic of radical youth movements around the world.”

The world of the classical whodunnit (truyện trinh thám) is one of order, repression and good manners, which is why it was so successful among the English middle classes as a place to explore shocking subconscious (tiềm thúc) desires. Shock was a tactic McQueen had already employed in his own shows and he seemed to have no problem translating that into épater les bourgeois.
