“You have to be cruel to be kind” = phải tàn nhẫn mới là yêu thương -> nghĩa là bạn phải chia sẻ thẳng thắn để giúp ai đó nhận ra sự thật dù có thể khiến họ tổn thương.

Ví dụ
AS we're sure all parents will agree, sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind to your little ones - otherwise they'd watch TV all day, eat sweets for dinner and never go to bed of their own accord.

I am loathe to disagree with the advice from your mother, who sounds like a lovely woman and is right in many ways when she advises you to be kind, but I think you would be being kind in telling your friend to ease off. In the words of that old song, sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. You’re right: it’s going to be incredibly painful. But you will be doing your friend a huge favour if you are straight with her and tell her that if she does not calm down then you can no longer be friends with her. I would be very surprised if she has not been told this before. Her behaviour does sound very needy and a bit creepy at times. You won’t be the first person she has spooked and I suspect that you won’t be the last.

Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. If you're Hakan Calhanoglu that means piling misery on the team you could well end up playing for at the end of the season. Calhanoglu has been a gem under Pioli and he is right to count himself as unfortunate in a number of games this season. The Turkish international is the most unlucky midfielder in Serie A with five efforts striking the post already this season. Serie A's MVP for the month of December, Calhanoglu is a man in form. The 26-year-old has six goals and nine assists in 21 games this season and Juventus will not need reminding of the Turkish star's ability - particularly from distance.
