‘’Overpaid, oversexed and over here’’. That was the resentful (oán hận) and contemptuous (khinh bỉ) opinion many British people came to have of the thousands of American GIs stationed in several military bases in Britain during the Second World War. The gum chewing, brash, hard drinking and womanizing American soldiers frequently got into pub brawls and dangerous knife fights which built up a feeling of disdain for the yanks among the locals.
The saying “overpaid, oversexed, and over here” may have been true about American GIs during World War II, but today’s military presents itself much differently. Wartime regulations (luật lệ) all but forbid sex in combat zones.

Responsible for some of them, though, were not British soldiers stationed in the South West, but instead American GIs who had been sent to give the Allies a vital (quan trọng) boost in the war. They were, as was commonly claimed, 'overpaid, oversexed and over here'.
