I confess I have never read an Aga saga or a bodice ripper — or indeed a western (though Hitler, incidentally, read nothing else). In my 20s I got through a great deal of science fiction; this enthusiasm developed into an abiding interest in cosmology, which still satisfies some vague spiritual itch.
Early on, her books were lazily dubbed ‘Aga sagas’ because of their middle-class (trung lưu) Home Counties domestic settings. But, actually, they’re darker and more subversive (lật đổ). Over the past 30 years, she’s tackled adoption (one of her stepsons is adopted) and adultery, lesbianism, contested wills and post-traumatic stress.

I set out to write an Aga Saga, and a few pages in, realised this was going to be a family story with a dark secret at its heart.
The queen of the “Aga saga” has come up with a plot twist that may make many of her readers boil. Joanna Trollope has suggested that women are “emotionally ambitious” and then have the audacity (cả gan) to become resentful when their partners assume a dependent role.
