"The receiver is as bad as the thief" = người nhận cũng sai như kẻ cắp -> nghĩa là người mua hay bằng cách nào đó có được đồ mà họ biết trước là đồ ăn cắp thì cũng có lỗi như kẻ cắp; tương tự vậy, nếu một người phỉ báng, vu khống ai đó thì không thể bào chữa rằng mình chỉ lặp lại lời người khác mà thôi.

Ví dụ
It is an old maxim that “the receiver is as bad as the thief,” but a bill has been introduced in Congress that is calculated to make the receiver not only a little belter than the thief, but to give him a decided advantage (lợi thế) over the man who has been robbed.

But seeing the receiver is as bad as the thief, and such buyers as bad as receivers, the cheap pennyworths (một xu) of plundered (cướp đoạt) goods may in fine prove dear enough to their consciences.” According to an old song: “All men said, it became me well, / And Robin Hood’s penny worth I did sell.” Later, a good pennyworth turned into an idiom, with no mention of Robin Hood left.

The receiver is as bad as the thief! Barbershop owner or not…if he refuses to back up his story and name the person who gave him the laptop, then he should be punished (trừng phạt) accordingly.

One of the strongest safeguards (bảo vệ) of movable property lies in the fact that stolen goods are not readily salable (dễ bán). The market for stolen property is spoiled or greatly restricted by the circumstance that in law the receiver is as bad as the thief, and the innocent possessor of stolen goods is likely to loose the purchase money, if he does not get into more serious trouble, when the rightful owner's claim is made good.
