"They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance" nghĩa là gì?

"They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance" = ở khoảng cách này chúng cũng chẳng bắn trúng con voi đâu -> lời cuối của tướng John Sedgwick trong cuộc Nội chiến Mỹ, ngay sau đó ông bị một tay thiện xạ Hợp bang miền Nam bắn chết.

Ví dụ
“They couldn’t hit an elephant at this distance.”  — Union Major General John Sedgwick, reprimanding (kiển trách) his men for ducking (cúi đầu) for cover, just before he was killed at the Battle of Spotsylvania.

“Dodging (né tránh) this way for single bullets!” he laughingly said. “What will you do when they open fire along the whole line? I am ashamed of you. They couldn’t hit an elephant at this distance.”

In other cases, the karmic (nghiệp chướng) payback is almost immediate. During the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House in May 1864, Union general John Sedgwick admonished (kiển trách) his troops who were seeking cover from enemy fire. His last words are said to have been “They couldn’t hit an elephant at this distance.” Moments later, he was mortally wounded by a Confederate sharpshooter’s bullet.

As comments go, it was up there with the last words of the American Civil War general, John Sedgwick who said: "They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance..." Burnley were losing, time was almost up (thời gian sắp hết) and their manager, Sean Dyche, decided to throw on his No 9, Sam Vokes, to a shout from behind him of: "Why is Vokesy coming on? What's he going to do in five minutes?"
