Joseph Fergie, 20, had been out drinking and clubbing at ATIK nightclub in Edinburgh on Friday, when he attempted to order a taxi to his home in Leith.

Hours later driver woke the call centre worker, from Edinburgh in Scotland, up around 8.30am to tell him he had arrived and the bill was £400.

The first time he realised something was wrong was when he peered out the window to see "sheep kicking about the countryside",

Rather than in his bed in the Edinburgh suburb, he was in Kirkcudbright, a backwater of Dumfries and Galloway – more than 100 miles away from destination.

He said: “I’ve had never heard of Kirkcudbright before last night and I doubt I’ll be able to ever forget it now.
