"Vatican roulette" -> nghĩa là phương pháp tránh thai, trong đó chỉ hoạt động tình dục vào những ngày nguời phụ nữ ít có khả năng dính bầu nhất. Đây là phương pháp ít hiệu quả nhất nhưng vẫn được dùng đến ngày nay.

Natural family planning is arguably as old as the human race. Women have always been at least imprecisely (không chính xác) aware that their likelihood of becoming pregnant rises and falls in accordance with (phù hợp) a natural cycle. There are references to intentional period abstinence (kiêng) in the works of St. Augustine and in ancient Chinese medical documents. In the modern era, what users refer to colloquially (thông tục) as "NFP" or, waggishly, as "Vatican roulette," began with the publication of The Rhythm of Sterility and Fertility in Women by Dr. Leo Latz in 1932.

He came to Hyde Park with his wife, Maureen (nee McCarthy), a Radcliffe student whom he had met on a blind date in Cambridge while he was in law school. They married soon after his graduation (tốt nghiệp) in 1960. Also in tow were their children—they eventually had nine, five sons and four daughters. A devout (sùng đạo) Catholic, he called their method of birth control “Vatican roulette.”

Trouble is, there is no universal position (tư tưởng) concerning contraception (tránh thai) among people who are fighting legalized abortion (phá thai). The Roman Catholic Church, of course, formally opposes “artificial” methods of birth control (i.e., only abstinence-based “natural” approaches like the “rhythm method,” jocularly known as Vatican roulette, are permitted (cho phép)), although it’s a moral teaching that is very heavily ignored by Catholic laity in this country.

Scalia also had an irrepressible (không thể kìm nén được) joie de vivre. He had a crackling wit and a smug smile to match. He could be a card, a clown or a mischievous child. He described his and his wife’s birth control method as “Vatican Roulette.”
