So the first written use of mama put dates to 1979 in the Journal of Environmental Management, while the most recent comes from 2016: @ivienobody tweeting, “It's cheaper to eat mama put nowadays than cook.”
The noun “mama put” from the webinar’s (hội thảo trên mạng) title, means: “A street vendor, typically a woman, selling cooked food at low prices from a handcart or stall. Also: a street stall or roadside restaurant run by such a vendor; (as a mass noun) the type of food sold by such vendors.” (During the webinar it was pronounced mah-mah-POOT, though during the question session someone noted that a variation emphasizes the second syllable.)
Obi Iyiegbu, aka Obi Cubana, has spoken on how he became rich, tracing it to how he started an eatery (quán ăn) in Abuja after his NYSC year. Th political science graduate spoke in an interview with BBC Pidgin, in which he also addressed the controversies (tranh cãi) over his 78 year-old mum’s burial in Oba, Anambra state. He said when he couldn’t get any job, after the NYSC in Abuja, he started doing “small small mama put (local restaurant)”.
