"Powder boy" -> nghĩa là người phụ trách đạn dược trên tàu chiến.
Ví dụ
“Powder Boy” James V. Johnston. Young Jimmie Johnston had accompanied (hộ tống) his mother to visit his father, Captain John V. Johnston, aboard the U.S.S. gunboat Forest Rose, in peaceful waters on the Mississippi.
Upon reaching the gun deck, an exploding Confederate shell knocked Blake down and killed a nearby powder boy manning (điều khiển) one of the guns. Blake was not assigned a combat role, but rather than retreating (rút lui) to safety below deck, he stripped to the waist and began running powder boxes to the gun loaders, taking over the powder boy’s responsibilities.
James Forten (1766–1842) is a good example of the case. During the American Revolution, Forten, age 14, signed on the privateer (tàu lùng) Royal Louis where he served as a powder boy, alongside 20 other blacks.
Served by a crew of nine, including a powder boy, a charge of 3.25 pounds of black powder propelled (đẩy tới) a 29-pound shell up to 6,700 yards at 25 degrees elevation and 27 seconds of flight time. Number 307 was loaned to the Treasury Department in March 1864, thus it did not see service on a U.S. Navy ship.
