Although his wife, 96-year-old Alphena Babineau, isn’t able to be there, she also did her part for the war effort. Alphena Babineau, a real-life Rosie the Riveter, was just 18 when she signed (đăng ký) on to work at the Todd-Bath Iron Shipbuilding Corp. in South Portland, a company that was started in 1940 and closed at the end of the war.
During the war, Wahe worked at the Rock Island Arsenal and later the Quonset Point Naval Air Station in Melville, Rhode Island. Women Ordinance Workers, or WOWs, were symbolized (là biểu tượng của) by “Rosie the Riveter” for pulling the same load as the men they replaced by operating (vận hành) heavy machinery, making weapons, crating ammunition and anything else that would help the war effort. At the height of World War II, there were over 5,000 WOWs working in armories across the nation.
These industrious women took on difficult jobs normally held by men, proving they could break gender barriers and social norms (định kiến). These women came to be represented by an icon known as “Rosie the Riveter.”
Fox owes his interest in documentaries to his decision to move to San Francisco. When he arrived in the 1980s, locals were cranking out one innovative (tiên tiến) documentary after another. These films covered topics as diverse as The Times of Harvey Milk, which tells the story of the gay icon, to Rosie the Riveter, a look at five women who went to work during World War II.
