"Clinging vine" nghĩa là gì?

"Clinging vine" có clinging là bám dai dẳng, vine là cây leo -> từ này nghĩa là người dựa dẫm quá nhiều vào người khác, không có tính tự lập tự chủ.

Ví dụ
The woman hangs on, not with the delicacy (mỏng manh) of a clinging vine, but with the tenacity incredible in its intensity, to the very persons, institutions and values that demean her, degrade her, glorify her powerlessness, insist upon constraining and paralysing the most honest expressions of her will and being.

It is revealing to compare orations by men about ideal womanhood during times of peace and times of war. Apparently, nobody wanted a clinging vine or a decorative ninny (người ngu ngốc, dại dột) during the Revolutionary War or the Civil War, when women were needed to staff hospitals, raise money for wounded soldiers, run farms, and feed the army.

Another politician stated, “man is the sturdy oak and woman is the clinging vine”. These chauvinistic sentiments (ý kiến) and backroom politicking caused parliament, and later the local press, to more or less bury the petition.
