Another video meme has emerged to distract the internet. If you haven’t seen the Mannequin Challenge in your social media feeds or on your TV screen, you probably will soon.
It feels mesolithic (thời kì đồ đá cũ) in internet years, but the original mannequin challenge is preserved as well as any Florentine sculpture, on Twitter, dated 26 October by a user called @pvrity___ (Jasmine Cavins). In it, a group of teens at Edward H White high school, in Jacksonville, Florida, remain completely still in class in mildly interesting poses.
The “Mannequin Challenge” took the web by storm, starting with the Cool Teens in high schools before making its way to the worlds of celebrities, professional sports, concerts, and politicians, (It’s even gotten political, as with this powerful Black Lives Matter-themed compilation film.) Between Britney Spears, Blac Chyna, and Beyoncé, it’s become something of a celebrity rite of passage. And when First Lady Michelle Obama gets in on the game, well, it’s official: we have a national phenomenon on our hands.
