"When the tree falls, the monkeys scatter" nghĩa là gì?

"When the tree falls, the monkeys scatter" = khi cây đổ, đàn khỉ chạy tán loạn -> nghĩa là khi mất đi quyền lực, vị thế, sức mạnh thì người ủng hộ, môn đồ cũng sẽ rời bỏ.

Ví dụ
To quote (trích dẫn) a Chinese idiom, Shu dao hu sun san. When the tree falls the monkeys scatter. On April 18, for example, Duprey, through his Girl Friday, Cheryl Netto, sent me one of her e-mails that said, "We have been informed by Mr Duprey's legal advisers (cố vấn) in Trinidad that the commissioner (ủy viên hội đồng) of the Commission of Enquiry has raised strong objections (phẩn đối) to the articles in the Guardian and they have recommended that no further articles be published while the enquiry is still in progress."

This five-character chengyu means ‘when the tree falls, the monkeys scatter’, which is the Chinese equivalent of ‘rats fleeing from a sinking ship’. 猢狲 húsūn is the Chinese word for ‘macaque’.

“Our house has now enjoyed nearly a century of dazzling (sáng chói) success. Suppose one day "joy at its height engenders (gây ra) sorrow". And suppose that, in the words of another proverb, "when the tree falls, the monkeys scatter". Will not our reputation as one of the great, cultured households of the age then turn into a hollow mockery (chế giễu)?"...Honour and disgrace follow each other in an unending (không hồi kết) cycle.
