"A parasocial relationship is a one-sided relationship," she explains. A person can develop a parasocial relationship with a figure in the media, such as a celebrity, a fictional character, or even a social media influencer. "Typically someone that they do not know personally, but admire and relate to," adds Bacow.

The researchers found that listening to more podcasts also predicted a greater sense of meaning in one’s life. Forming a parasocial relationship — a one-sided psychological attachment people form with actors, influencers, and even fictional characters — with podcasters also led people to experience a heightened sense of social engagement and relatedness, which was defined as the “basic psychological need for social connection and belongingness.”

Of course there’s no requirement (đòi hỏi, yêu cầu) to like anyone, famous or otherwise. But when your emotions are so strong for someone you’ve never met that you feel the need to throw out insults, that represents an issue. A parasocial relationship is a one-sided one, whereby somebody becomes attached to (and invested in) a media figure. Arguably worse than infatuation (làm cuồng dại, mê đắm) is when this fascination is solely negative, which we’re calling an anti-parasocial relationship.
