He believes the size of the whale shark has prompted an evolutionary (sự tiến hóa) response that has effectively turned by-catch – such as the brown sargassum (tảo mơ) seaweed (rong biển) common at Ningaloo – into food.

The shark species proposals were keenly anticipated. Many marine species have seen large drops in their numbers either due to overfishing or being caught as by-catch where another species is being targeted. The proposal on Requiem sharks included a number of species, not necessarily endangered but for the reason that they are hard to tell apart from other species that are endangered. The recommendation to include all such species is to try to conserve those at risk.

Commercial fisheries (ngành công nghiệp cá) have strict limits on the amount of fish they can catch. And often they also have to abide by limits on bycatch of marine animals (sinh vật biển) that get unintentionally caught on fishing lines or nets. A new study from the University of Washington suggests that when it comes to reducing bycatch in the fishing industry, permanently closing off stretches of marine areas may be less effective than dynamic (sôi nổi, năng nổ), temporary closures. Ray Hilborn, a marine biologist (nhà nghiên cứu sinh vật biển) from the University of Washington’s School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, joins us, along with Heather Mann. She’s the executive director of Midwater Trawlers Cooperative, a nonprofit trade association of nearly 30 fishing vessels based in Newport.
