A woman who allegedly stole an alligator's egg went on to keep the hatched animal as a pet at home for more than 20 years.

The eight-foot-long reptile (loài bò sát) was found by Texas Parks and Wildlife officials in the woman's backyard (sân sau) on Saturday (March 4).

She did not have the correct permits (giấy phép) to legally care for the gator having stolen the egg from the Animal World and Snake Farm Zoo in the Texan city of New Braunfels,

The alligator was kept at the woman's house in the Austin suburb of Buda and game warden Joann Garza told KSAT: "It was very friendly with her."

American gators are known to inhabit the rivers, marshes (đầm lầy) and swamps (đầm lầy) of the Texas Gulf Coast and are, occasionally, sighted in residential areas.

The largest of the species can grow up to more than 14ft long and weigh in excess of 55st.
