"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds" = kiên định một cách ngu ngốc là con quỷ của những cái đầu hẹp hòi -> nghĩa là người thông minh không cứng nhắc trong suy nghĩ. Câu này có nguồn gốc từ bài luận "Self-Reliance" của Ralph Waldo Emerson năm 1841.

Ví dụ
I don't care what my hero Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, that "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." There was nothing foolish about the sound of the Audio Note room, which is unerringly (không sai) consistent, natural, pleasing—and relatively affordable—year after year after . . .

At a time when many high-yield investors were (and still are) doubling down on retail REITs, I decided that the best plan of action was not follow the herd (bầy đàn). It seemed much more intelligent to recognize that the retail apocalypse was alive and well. As the reader explained, quoting Ralph Waldo Emerson, “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.”

As Ralph Waldo Emerson so sagely (hiền triết) noted " A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines."  Using that as a yardstick, it appears that our federal district courts -- particularly the Southern District of New York -- are under the control of great minds.
