On-again, off-again relationship hoặc on-and-off relationship = mối quan hệ tắt-bật -> nghĩa là mối quan hệ có đổ vỡ, chia tay rồi lại hàn gắn.

On-and-off relationships have something of a bad reputation (tiếng xấu). It’s certainly true this pattern (hình mẫu) often develops in toxic or troubled relationships (mối quan hệ độc hại hay rắc rối), but this doesn’t always represent a less-than-ideal situation (đại diện cho tình huống ít lý tưởng hơn). Sometimes, an on-and-off relationship might be exactly what you want.
An on/off again relationship, over time, can create the illusion of stability (ảo tưởng về sự ổn định). However, the people in the relationship are always aware of the instability (nhận thức tính không ổn định) and lack of trust (thiếu sự tin tưởng) that is necessary to sustain it (duy trì mối quan hệ).
But at the end of the day (nhưng đến cuối cùng), most people who have been in on-again off-again relationships will attest (chứng thực) to how distressing (phiền muộn) they can feel.
