"Lay on the Line" nghĩa là gì?

Động từ to lay nghĩa là đặt, để, hay trình bày. 'Lay on the line' có nghĩa là đưa ra thông tin một cách thẳng thắn và quyết liệt.
Ví dụ
“I work with an accountant who was showing up late for work. Not any more. Our boss called her into the office last month and ever since she has been right on time (đi đúng giờ). Apparently (rõ ràng là), the boss laid it on the line (nói thẳng) that she’d better be at the office for her scheduled shift (giờ giấc đã chỉ định) or she’d be fired.”
“I like my mayor so much. In order to improve the economy, he knows that some tough choices have to be made. So, instead of being afraid to share the painful truth (thay vì sợ phải nêu lên sự thật đau lòng), he’s laying it on the line (thẳng thắn trình bày) that the city needs to cut some services.”
