"Burn at the stake" nghĩa là gì?

'Burn at the stake' có một từ mới là stake nghĩa là cái cọc. 'Burn at the stake' là trói người vào cọc để đốt sống. Thành ngữ này xuất hiện từ thời Trung Cổ bên châu Âu khi người ta dùng biện pháp này để thiêu sống những người theo dị giáo (heresy/heterodoxy). Ngày nay, thành ngữ này chỉ có nghĩa là trừng phạt gắt gao.
Ví dụ
I couldn’t understand why I wasn’t feeling better. Then I found out that the medication (thuốc) I bought over the internet was fake. I hope that the authorities (nhà chức trách) arrest the criminals (kẻ phạm pháp) who are responsible (chủ mưu) and jail them for the rest of their lives (bỏ tù suốt đời). They deserve to be burned at the stake!
While mom and dad were out last night, John drove mom’s car without asking permission (không xin phép). What’s more, he backed it into a tree (lùi xe đụng vào cây) and now there is a big dent (vết lõm lớn). He’s going to be burned at the stake (phạt nặng) this time. It’ll be a punishment he won’t soon forget.
