"Clean slate" nghĩa là gì?

'Clean slate' (shared via VOA) có một từ mới là slate, loại đá đen dùng làm tấm bảng ở trường hay cửa tiệm. Người ta dùng phấn trắng để ghi chép mọi việc lên đó, và sau đó có thể xóa đi một cách dễ dàng. Ngày nay clean slate dùng để chỉ việc xóa bỏ những gì sai trái trong quá khứ để có cơ hội thành công trong một hoàn cảnh mới mà không bị khó khăn gì ngăn chặn.

“Jeremy had a terrible (rất nặng) gambling (đánh bạc) problem (nghiện). He got into such bad debt that he lost his house and his car. Eventually, he received counselling (được khuyên bảo), and a court allowed him to declare bankruptcy (khai phá sản) to have most of his debts forgiven. That’s given him a clean slate (cơ hội xóa bỏ mọi lỗi lầm trong quá khứ mà anh cần có để bắt đầu lại từ đầu) he needed. He’s slowly rebuilding his life.”

“The people in my community aren’t very happy these days with our local officials. They’re fed up with how little is getting accomplished (hoàn thành). If this slow pace of change continues, I predict (dự đoán) a lot of those politicians (chính trị gia) will lose their seats (mất ghế) in the next election. A clean slate (danh sách ứng cử viên mới) might just be what it will take to meet the voters’ expectations (mong đợi của cử tri).
