"Rough sledding" nghĩa là gì?

'Rough sledding' có từ rough là ráp, nhám, xù xì, gồ ghề và sledding là đường đi xe trượt tuyết, vì thế 'rough/tough/hard sledding' có nghĩa là thời kỳ hay tình huống khó khăn.

If last week is anything to go by, Russia may be in for some rough sledding indeed. The price of oil, which needs to be around $105/per barrel in order for Russia to balance its books, hovers (lơ lửng) around $60 and could drop even further.

The Democrat Party has been utterly (hoàn toàn) repudiated (bác bỏ, không thừa nhận) in the South, certainly: Democrats, says one report, “will be left without a single U.S. senator or governor across nine states — stretching (trải dài từ) from the Carolinas to Texas.” Yet, this was not merely a regional repudiation. Democrats found rough sledding in the rest of the country too, from national to state races. Even the governorships in royal blue Maryland, Massachusetts and Illinois fell to the Republicans.

We think the local food pantries will find rough sledding but will prevail in the end. Funds from corporate donors are flowing in and the food pantries are operated by skilled and compassionate individuals who can rely on the community for private donations. Once again, there should be enough food to go around.
