"Meant to be" nghĩa là gì?

'Meant to be' nghĩa là định mệnh/số mệnh để tồn tại, để là điều gì/ai đó (destined to exist/ destined or fated to be something).

Ví dụ
The "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" star and the former NBA player may be expecting their first child together. "Those close to Khloé think she could finally be pregnant," a source revealed (tiết lộ). "All she ever wanted was to have a baby with Lamar, and if her wish is actually coming true, she'll know their love was meant to be (tình yêu giữa hai người là định mệnh)."

A group of youngsters gathered (tụ tập) at Marine Drive in Kerala on Sunday to protest (biểu tình) against the moral policing (kiểm soát đạo đức) in the state. Although the ‘Kiss of Love’ was meant to be a peaceful protest (biểu tình ôn hòa), it turned violent (bạo động) by the end as policemen entered the scene. But something funny did come out of it afterall!

Ex-Apple CEO John Sculley on Steve Jobs: 'We Were Meant to Be a Team'. You read that right--John Sculley, former chief executive of Apple and Steve Jobs's rival, wishes the visionary (nhìn xa trông rộng) founder had stayed on.

Central Bankers Weren't Meant to Be Heroes: The U.S. recovery is starting to look halfway respectable (đáng kể/ kha khá). Europe's economies, meanwhile, face the risk (đối mặt nguy cơ) of a third recession (suy thoái) in seven years. There's a lesson in that contrast: Good economic policy means never having to ask your central bank to be a hero.

'Piss off' nghĩa là làm ai tức giận, nổi điên; chọc tức (to make angry).

Ví dụ
Charlie Hebdo KNEW exactly what they were doing. They deliberately (cố tình) drew cartoons of Mohammed in an attempt to piss off 1.6 billion Muslims. They KNEW that muslims takes blasphemy (lời báng bổ) very seriously. They KNEW that people get killed for drawing cartoons of Mohammed. But what did they do? They went ahead and insulted (xỉ nhục) other people's religious figures. The main purpose was not satire (châm biếm) but to invoke (kích động) hate and make money in the process. So no I am NOT Charlie.

Somehow, I don't think the powers-that-be understand the way decisions like this affect the Windows support community. I can't fathom (hiểu) why Microsoft would so aggressively piss off the people who are trying to keep Windows working, over such a tiny concession (sự nhượng bộ).

But of course, lack of votes doesn't lead to the absence of government, rather a coalition government (chính quyền liên minh) that nobody voted for which make compromises (thỏa hiệp) that piss off their supporters, further fueling apathy (sự lãnh đạm/hờ hững) in a vicious cycle (vòng luẩn quẩn).

A mocking (nhạo báng) photo of Kim Jong-un in a full face of make-up is sweeping social media in the wake of the recent Sony hack. The photo, created to 'piss off North Korea,' also contains the hashtag '#‎YouCantSilenceOurFreedomOfSpeech'. This after government officials confirmed that North Korea was in fact behind the hack, hoping to get Sony to cancel the planned release of their upcoming Kim Jong-un assassination film The Interview.

"Leaf through" nghĩa là gì?

“What one does to another” (from “Carichos”). Photo credit: MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, BOSTON.

'Leaf through' nghĩa là giở sách, lật từng trang sách như khi tìm kiếm (thông tin) hay xem lướt một cuốn sách (to turn pages, as in searching or browsing).

Ví dụ
Initially their feelings are expressed only in loaded (nặng nề) glances (liếc nhìn), and then, long scenes of dialogue. In a pivotal scene, Aydin is sitting at his desk, typing his latest column into his MacBook, while his sister, Necla, leafing through a magazine, sits behind him on a sofa.

Revisiting the show and leafing through copies of the catalog and of Goya’s great print series at home, I find myself wondering: Is it permissible (chấp nhận được), today, in an enlightened (khai sáng), pluralistic (đa nguyên) society, to insist (nhấn mạnh/khăng khăng) so vehemently (kịch liệt) on this stupidity, and in particular on the stupidity of violence?

The letters that Redlich found were the first letters Joe wrote to Rose after they were married. Leafing through the envelopes that have yellowed with time, Rose Hill grew quiet. She opened one and read it. Tears welled in her eyes. She laughed. She whispered, "Oh my God."

She is leafing through The Color Purple, a book acquired on a visit home to her mother’s over the Christmas. Years ago she started to read the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Alice Walker “to improve my vocabulary” but found the language from the American Deep South somewhat alien and not what she needed at the time. Now she is engrossed. A changed woman.
