Ví dụ
The color purple’s ties to kings and queens date back to ancient world, where it was prized for its bold hues and often reserved for the upper crust (tầng lớp thượng lưu, tầng lớp trên của xã hội). The Persian king Cyrus adopted a purple tunic (áo dài thắt ngang lưng (áo ngoài chùng) (thường) không có ống ta, trùm đến tận đầu gối và đôi khi thắt lưng bằng dây lưng (như) người cổ Hy Lạp và La Mã mặc) as his royal uniform, and some Roman emperors forbid their citizens from wearing purple clothing under penalty of death (tử hình). Purple was especially revered (tôn kính, sùng kính, kính trọng) in the Byzantine Empire. Its rulers wore flowing purple robes and signed their edicts (chi dụ, sắc lệnh) in purple ink, and their children were described as being “born in the purple.”

The wall paintings and mosaics that decorated Roman villas of the era often employed the color to convey status. Byzantine rulers assumed a love of violet, too. A 547 A.D. mosaic cycle in the church of San Vitale in modern-day Ravenna, Italy, depicts (miêu tả) emperor (hoàng đế) Justinian I draped head-to-toe in purple cloth; the courtiers that flank him wear more modest bands of the same fabric, suggesting their high rank. (It was the Byzantines who coined the term “born in the purple.”)

When Byzantine empresses gave birth, it was in a purple chamber, while kings and emperors draped themselves in the colour. When King Ptolemy wore purple to visit the Roman Emperor Caligula in 40AD, the latter took it as an attempt to seize power, and had him killed. Likewise, Julius Caesar was so enamoured of the colour that he decreed only he could wear it, and even King Henry VIII of England viewed others wearing the “king’s colour” as high treason. This in turn gave rise to the term “to be born in the purple”, ie, of noble or royal blood.
